The price of permits on the European Union's carbon market rose back to above 100 euros in March, approaching record levels hit above 105 euros in the previous month on growing prospects of higher activity and industrial firms' demand for permits. EU countries approved on February 21 plans to raise 20 billion euros in grants from the EU carbon market, partly by holding carbon permit sales earlier than planned. Countries will be able to spend the grants on renewable energy and energy-saving renovations to help replace Russian gas, and projects to help heavy industry decarbonise.
